The two men in Nebraska have been cited for unlawful possession of the eagle, but more serious charges are possible.
STANTON, Nebraska — Two men are facing criminal charges after they shot a bald eagle with plans to cook and eat the bird, authorities say.
Ramiro Hernandez-Tziquin, 20 and Domingo Zetino-Hernandez,20, both Honduran nationals living in Norfolk, Nebraska, each have been cited for unlawful possession of the eagle, the Stanton County Sheriff’s Office. The two men could face more serious charges as the investigation continues. The sheriff’s office says deputies received reports of a suspicious vehicle in the Wood Duck Recreation Area, a public land area, at about 4 p.m. Tuesday. Deputies found the vehicle and the two suspects, who cannot speak English, then discovered they had used a rifle to kill the eagle.the men told deputies through an interpreter that they had shot a vulture. The sheriff’s office tells the Times it’s unclear if the men knew they had violated federal law by killing an eagle.
Nebraska Game and Parks officials took custody of the eagle and the rifle, the sheriff’s office says. The two men have not been jailed because the current charge is a misdemeanor, the Times reports. In October, a Tuscarawas County, Ohio, man was sentenced to one year of probation and fined $4,000 after heThe Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act of 1940 prohibits anyone, without a permit, from shooting bald or golden eagles.
