Los Angeles is where common sense goes to die
Attacking students and families who wish to access public schools best suited to their needs is nothing new in California; in fact, it’s baked into state law. Currently, the state hasrequiring public schools to be accessible to every K-12 student according to Available to All — a nonpartisan watchdog defending equal access to public schools.
As things stand, most families have severely limited public school options, usually determined by their ability to afford a certain home address. Parents who believe their children would be better served by a public school outside their assigned district have to jump through hoops to transfer their students. They must get a permit authorized by the resident and non-resident district or, as a last resort, pay the premium to move near a better public school.
If state policymakers are serious about improving public school outcomes, they must stand with families and support public school choice. All families deserve access to the best public schools no matter their background; no outdated law, school board, or union should dictate whether they are allowed to access the best our public school system has to offer.
