Opinion: Melissa Melendez: Progressive approaches to justice leave Californians less safe

One of a string of liberal “reform-minded” district attorneys throughout California who seek to replace punitive justice with a sense form of equity, Boudin presided over a predictable crime surge in a city plagued for years by drug use, delinquency, and organized crime.

Beyond anecdotes, let’s take a look at the numbers: In the first three months of 2023 – well after Boudin’s removal – San Francisco recorded 200 drug overdoses, with no less than 159 of these deaths fentanyl related. In a political stunt this past April, Mayor London Breed and the new District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced the national guard would be deployed to help curtail fentanyl trafficking and they decried the fentanyl crisis as a “humanitarian crisis.

Even now, Boudin has announced a new gig at UC Berkeley’s Boalt School of Law: founding executive director of the brand-new Criminal Law & Justice Center. Progressives simply cannot divorce themselves from the ideology and policies that enable criminals. Certainly, those perplexed by the ongoing lawlessness after Boudin’s recall have become painfully aware that the collapse of their city’s public safety cannot be reduced to just one man.
