The career of Melissa Mannett has taken off after she won the local Next Big Thing radio contest. She performs at Country Thunder on Sunday.
local country star Jess Moskaluke, whose career took off after winning the same contest in 2011.“The competition was really stiff,” said Moskaluke, who has seen Mannett perform in the past. “I wasn’t there , but I’m super excited for her. I know it really gave my career a leg up so I have no doubt that she’ll take every opportunity, including this one to do the same for herself.”
Despite being labelled the Next Big Thing, Mannett is not a newcomer to the music business. The 37-year-old arrived on the scene almost 20 years ago and continues to share a passion that has been there for as long as she can remember.Article content “I don’t really know an age; I just remember learning the chords to every song on the radio and singing in my basement and trying to write songs,” she said. “When I was in high school I got really involved in the music program. We had vocal jazz and choir and a high school rock band called the Sax Pistols, which was led by our music teacher. Straight out of high school I joined up with an already established cover band because they were replacing their singer.
In her early days of performing in bars, Mannett recalls having to exit between sets because she wasn’t of legal age. A few years later, she received some grant money to release a self-titled EP in 2009, followed by a full album in 2012 called Heroine. Her latest single, The Thing About That, came out in 2018 and she’s eager to release more material.Article content
