A nearly two-decade study of birds living in Melbourne's Albert Park has revealed surprising relationship patterns between black swans.

Swans are symbols of love, devotion and grace. There are plenty of fairy tales about swans mating for life, and even grieving for years if their beloved partner dies."We have pairs that spend years and years together," said Raoul Mulder from Melbourne University's school of bio-sciences.Since 2006, Melbourne University academics have been studying the black swan s at Melbourne's Albert Park.

For 18 years, the university has used collars with unique number and letter sequences to identify the hundreds of swans being monitored from afar. "We assumed pairs would stay together for the whole year. But yeah, they do separate. That really surprised us," Mr Knowles said. "And we've looked if they had more offspring if they separated and found that was not necessarily the case. So, we need to collect more data and figure out why these breaks occur."It appears synchronicity is a key to lasting love if you're a swan.Sync or swim: how swans match each others behaviourThat means that a swan pairing doesn't just do the same things, such as eat, fly, preen and swim: they do it at the same time.
