MELAKA: Melaka's youngest executive councillor Kerk Chee Yee pays tribute to his late father - former DAP secretary-general Kerk Kim Hock - for making him a tough politician, hours before Father's Day.
While acknowledging that he faces many challenges being an exco in a first term Pakatan Harapan-led state government, the 27-year-old Ayer Keroh assemblyman felt his father's inspirational words made him strong in wading through obstacles with ease."I think of him every day, even more deeply when I speak on stage and I owe him a lot," he told The Star in an interview on Saturday .
The state 's Communications, Multimedia, NGO, Youth and Sports Development Committee chairman said it was not easy to manage such a portfolio, especially when people want to see tangible developments. Kerk said he was 12-years-old when his father quit frontline politics but said he had always reminded him, as the only son, to keep politics clean.
"Foremost, my father was a fighter for justice and never gave up easily while he refrained from running down opponents or insulting them.Kerk said his father was also a pragmatic person who analysed his strategies before taking action or making statements."He showed me the ropes on how to manage adversities and political foes that have come in very useful to me now," he said, adding that he thanked all fathers out there for always inspiring their children.
