KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission has yet to announce standard operating procedures for the coming Melaka state election, says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar . The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department noted that the EC would take the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic into consideration when drawing up the SOP.

"This includes preparing separate tents for those who are ill or positive with Covid-19 during polling," he said in reply to a supplementary question by Khoo Poay Tiong in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday . Khoo had wanted to know how the EC intended to get voters in Melaka to turn up to cast their ballots as there are still fears among some voters. Earlier, Wan Junaidi explained why there was a gap in implementing Undi18 although amendments to the Federal Constitution were made in 2019 for automatic registration of voters upon turning 18. "The EC has set 2023 as a timeline to implement Undi18 targeted October next year for the smooth implementation of the entire system. "This is because the EC has to clean up the electoral roll with regard to those who passed away, are in prison, mentally ill and sick.Earlier, Wan Junaidi informed the House that the Election Academy had introduced a Virtual Voter Education Education programme to educate young voters. There was a light moment in the House when Dr Maszlee Malik suggested the EC adopt a comic book he published for young Malaysians. "I hope the EC can use the comic as it is non-political and more on civics," he said while showing the book in the House. To this, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun quipped"I see that you are not only a YB and actor but have also produced a comic book," drawing laughter from the MPs.
