British author Angela Saini’s enlightening trip through history and science reveals the truth about the patriarchy, and that it might not be males’ best option.

The national obsession with the Matildas is at fever pitch when Angela Saini arrives in Sydney. The city is festooned in green and gold and its citizens are, suddenly, aficionados of the round-ball game.At the National Press Club in Canberra later that week, Saini – a British-born, US-based journalist and writer – ponders out loud why it has been an accepted norm for decades that girls play netball and hockey and boys get to play football and cricket.

“We are all born into a state and become a citizen. But it is quite difficult to convince people to want to stay and produce a surplus for the people in power, to give up your life, and your children’s lives, in defence of the state,” she says. “And you can clearly see how this binary division between men and women evolved. Not all women are great nurturers or want to be mothers and not all men want to fight, but the state doesn’t care.”To prove her point about the correlation between the patriarchy and the state, Saini delves into mother nature – and human societies – to find examples of non-patriarchal systems.

Even as recently as the Russian Revolution was there a nearly successful attempt to bring about gender equality.
