As a woman in management, chaos_surfer_ is very clear on the importance of female leadership in the newsroom: more women need to be involved in decision-making processes in order to pave the way for others and offer more diverse perspectives.
While Kate is fortunate to feel heard and respected in her current role, she concedes that not all South African newsrooms are as inclusive. I love working at News24 because it values everyone’s opinion. I love that you are valued for your skills and for the voice that you bring.
"I think it’s still important for us not to be complacent as female editors in encouraging other women in this newsroom to step up and step into roles of influence," she argues. Inclusivity is no longer a corporate catchphrase, and Kate credits pioneering women “who put up with it all, and push their way through” for the gradual shift towards equality. With the nature of the fast news environment which requires her to be constantly ‘switched on’, Kate loves to disconnect and recharge outdoors in her spare time.
