“Wigs are taking over the world!” Julien Parizet—the man better known by his Instagram handle and drag name, over the phone from Paris. The wigmaker is still attempting to make sense of the enormous success he’s had over the last couple years creating hair that is more rhinestone-encrusted sculpture than practical chignon.
Whatever it is that attracts his clientele, Parizet’s formula is clearly working as the wigmaker explains he still isn’t even signed to an agency. Because of Instagram, “work is coming in by email, so I’m not going to go to an agency and give them half of the money,” he says. “But it’s also because the world is changing, I think. Before, you couldn’t show your work except in magazines, or at events, or on celebrities. But now, you can show your work every day on Instagram.

He and his boyfriend fled the city for the French countryside back in March 2020. “I brought wigs and my tools with me because I was like, ‘If it’s the end of the world, I need to touch hair,’” he says.
As for the secret behind creating those more gravity-defying hairdos, Parizet replies simply: “It’s hairspray. A lot of hairspray!” He usually starts a new wig with a sketch before playing around with the hair itself. From there, he teases the hair into the desired shape and volume to “use it like a pattern” over which he applies sections of hair, smoothing it all together to create one seamless coiffure.
The wig master’s ultimate goal is to put on an exhibition of his designs. He also hopes to “have a house with an artist residency” one day for all of his friends, where they would be able to collaborate “without anyone having the power over it.” And while he knows both those dreams are still way off, he’s seen firsthand how quickly someone’s whole life can be transformed thanks to the Internet. “We are in a changing world and it can be really tricky,” he says.
