My process is different with each of these designers, but in general terms, it’s a process of coming to an understanding of what the collection is about: what inspired it, what attitude or energy is in it, what was explored in the design [process], what objectives that particular season has in creative and business terms. And then trying to make all of those things balanced and somehow visible and communicated in the showing of it.
Can I tell the audience who doesn’t know what it’s like? Well, for one, I would go to showroom appointments or to pick up samples for shoots and get asked to take the service elevator a lot. Or [I’d] show up at jobs where they would take one look at me and not trust meharder to prove myself than someone who was white or rich, had connections, designer clothes, etc.
. In good ways and bad, but what’s exciting is that I don’t believe anyone has the luxury to take any type of comfort for granted, and I’m excited to live that lifestyle.
