Three people from the Houston-area headed out for Berlin to compete in the Special Olympics World Games, beginning this weekend.At least three Houstonians will be among the thousands participating in the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin this coming week.
Kevin Harrell of The Woodlands will be competing in golf. While he has played basketball, bocce, bowling and softball, he said golf is his favorite.When off the green, Harrell works at a shop called Plants For All Seasons and an Italian restaurant. Harrell told Special Olympics Texas that his mother serves as his biggest source of encouragement and she challenges him to break the boundaries of what he thought possible. Harrell, who has Down syndrome, has participated in Special Olympics since he was 8.
Harrell is one of 7,000 athletes set to participate in the 2023 Special Olympic World Games, including 133 U.S. competitors. Additionally, 38 U.S. coaches and 23 U.S. delegation members will be attending.
