Jacob Davenport came through the ranks at Manchester City before excelling in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers

Having played for both clubs, he looks at his current employers as a reflection of his former ones. Yes, the difference in stadiums and budgets are massive, but the messages delivered by management are not. As a kid, Davenport joined City just after his sixth birthday and lived through the club’s change from noisy neighbours to the preeminent team in English football.

He said: “Everything was first class at City. Whatever you needed for a young footballer to reach their potential, it was there. The facilities were one thing but they also shaped you as a person. People there are very down to earth and are big on standards; simple things like manners, being appreciative of all the facilities; being on time. And those same principles apply at Derry under the guidance of boss Ruaidhri Higgins and his assistant, Paul Hegarty.

“He asks for simple basics in football, hard work, giving your all, playing for the badge, playing for your family. He drives the standards each day and never lets us drop under those because he knows the level of quality we have. And yet, when you look at his CV, and see that he played 51 times in the Championship, once for England’s Under 18s, you can sense that he could be doing better than the League of Ireland.“That was the lesson I have been handed by my mum and dad.
