Kelpy has developed a process for turning almost any variety of seaweed into an alternative to single-use plastic packaging.
Melbourne-based start-up Great Wrap raised $24 million last year to scale up production of its compostable cling wrap and pallet wrap, which is made using the starch from potato waste.The daughter of a fisherman, Ms Quin grew up in the coastal crayfishing town of Jurien Bay in Western Australia and learned about fish farming and the importance of restocking oceans from her father.
That Kelpy’s seaweed pellets can be used in existing machinery is a big bonus. It means producers can replace existing fossil fuel-based pellets without having to upgrade plants or machines, to manufacture packaging which is compostable and marine degradable. “We’ve come really far, really fast because we’ve been looking behind the curtain with these manufacturers and with these brands to really understand what problems we need to solve to integrate this new material into the existing manufacturing value chain,” Ms Quin said.
