reached out to Nastya Kovtun, 16, of Chaykovsky, Russia and Kaylee Yang, 20, from Canton, Michigan to commission portraits of Billie Eilish for the March issue, both thought they were being duped. “If I may be honest, at first I thought the email was a scam,” says Yang. In Kovtun’s case,’s visuals team had to send proof—a scan of the magazine’s masthead and translations in Russian—that we were indeed serious.
Before hearing the singer’s music in 2016, Yang, a nursing student at the University of Michigan, had typically steered clear of portraying people. “I stayed more towards animals, especially in high school, because I never knew who to draw,” she says. “I don’t really know a lot of famous people.” On her Instagram account,
