Editorial Global Times membantah kenyataan Ozil yang dianggap seperti persembahan badut dan menggambarkan pemain tengah Arsenal itu keliru dan melulu kerana menyalahgunakan namanya sebagai tokoh masyarakat. Ozil warga Jerman berketurunan Turki, mengutuk tindakan kejam China terhadap minoriti Muslim di Xinjiang menerusi Twitter, Jumaat lalu, malah turut mengkritik negara-negara Islam kerana gagal menyuarakan bantahan di atas kekejaman itu.Global Times yang mewakili suara Parti Komunis negara itu berkata pendirian Ozil merosakkan imejnya dalam kalangan peminat Cina dan akan memberi implikasi serius ke atas Arsenal.
“Rakyat China seharusnya melihat dengan jelas perbuatan Ozil kali ini umpama badut,” kata Global Times dalam kenyataan. Arsenal menerusi Weibo berkata, komen itu adalah pendapat peribadi Ozil dan kelab itu mempunyai polisi tidak membabitkan diri dalam politik.
