KwaZulu-Natal's MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka, urged motorists to adhere to road safety regulations after two fatal crashes at the weekend.

He said that, in the first incident, 54 passengers were travelling in a truck between Groutvlei and Ngomane when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn, killing six people instantly. Two later died in hospital.

In the Dannhauser incident, Hlomuka said a minibus taxi transporting traditional healers overturned after the driver lost control, resulting in the deaths of six people and several others injured. Hlomuka said the provincial government was concerned by the increasing number of road crashes. He said driver negligence was clear in both incidents.

"These two accidents are unacceptable and demonstrate negligence by drivers and vehicle owners. While we understand the plight of our people in farming areas, it is disturbing that 54 people can be loaded onto a truck. "Equally, in the Dannhauser incident, there is a clear sign of a traffic violation. The investigation into both these accidents is underway."In times of uncertainty you need journalism you can trust.
