Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching revealed that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) removed a staggering 63,652 scam-related contents from social media in 2022, highlighting a significant increase compared to 2023.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission ( MCMC ) took down 63,652 scam-related content on social media last year, according to Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching. She said the number showed a significant increase compared to 6,297 contents taken down in 2023. Teo said that among the identified scams involved artificial intelligence (AI) such as deepfakes, impersonating celebrities, videos, graphics and text.

“Through AI technology, it is now very easy to create deepfake videos. We see many celebrities becoming victims, such as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and former Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz recently. “The number 63,652 (contents) is large and it is based on the complaints we received ... but I believe there are many more out there. So, it is very important for us to educate the public to be more aware and concerned, always check and if unsure, do not share,” she said when attending the Kampung Angkat MADANI program at the FELDA Bukit Permai Convention Hall here today. She said this when asked about the statistics of scams on social media and deepfakes that involved several prominent figures in the country. Teo said many scams were in the form of Investment Guru, such as those involving Zeti Akhtar, who allegedly “shared” experiences and investment guidance, which ultimately aimed to deceive victims into falling victim to investment scams. “Actually, this is a way to lure people into joining their WhatsApp groups (scammers) and eventually they are affected and become victims of investment scams because the figures from the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) also show that investment scams are the largest scams,” she said.
