McDonald’s ousted CEO Steve Easterbrook over a consensual relationship with an employee. A simple policy, applied at the top, is one way to let everyone know that worse behavior – like harassment of subordinates – is out of bounds, writes jennifersaba.

McDonald’s dismissed Chief Executive Steve Easterbrook after determining he violated company policy and demonstrated poor judgement with a recent consensual relationship with an employee. The fast-food chain on Nov. 3 replaced Easterbrook with Chris Kempczinski as CEO and a member of the board. Kempczinski most recently served as president of McDonald’s USA.

Easterbrook will receive 26 weeks of severance and has agreed not to work with any competitors of McDonald’s for two years. In 2018, Easterbrook’s compensation package was worth $15.9 million, including a salary of $1.3 million.
