Embattled Homeland Security SecMayorkas returns to Capitol Hill on Wednesday amid a congressional investigation over his handling of the border and certain House Republicans threatening impeachment.
He'll appear before the House Judiciary Committee's oversight hearing to examine the Department of Homeland Security's operational failures, the unprecedented border crisis, and the abandonment of immigration enforcement under Mayorkas, according to the hearing announcement.House Republicans warned on the eve of the hearing that Mayorkas should come"prepared" to give clear answers and data on the state of the border.
“[Wednesday's] hearing will focus on, among other things, getting answers to two big questions: 1. How many illegal aliens has the Biden administration released into the United States? 2. Of that number, how many have the Biden administration removed from the United States?" the source wrote in a text message."If Secretary Mayorkas cannot answer those two questions, it will be a big problem.
However, it is House Judiciary Committee that has the authority to formally move forward on impeachment, making what Republicans learn Wednesday even more consequential for Mayorkas, who has hired legal representation to help navigate the GOP's investigation. Judiciary member Darrell Issa said all eyes will be on how Mayorkas handles questions this time around.
