By dragging his feet, what Fulop is really saying is that he wants to ensure DeGise’s successor is someone he – not the voters -- handpicks.
DeGise, embroiled in an expanding set of controversies since driving off after hitting and injuring a bicyclist with her SUV on July 19, no longer belongs on the council. Her actions -- coupled with her refusal to explain herself and a newly uncovered history of ignoring traffic laws – would be enough reason to call for her resignation. In addition, though, her presence has now become an unwelcome distraction for those charged with leading the second-largest city in the state.
The winner of the special election will fill out the remainder of DeGise’s term as an at-large council member, through Dec. 31, 2025.
