Mayor Eric Adams on Monday doubled down on his directive that forces homeless individuals suffering from severe mental illness into a hospital for evaluation even without their consent.
"I didn't get elected to do an easy task," Adams said at an unrelated press conference. "I got elected to look at these systemic problems that have been in city for generations."
The mayor also said there is no plan at this time to report the number of people who are being taken to a hospital for evaluation, making it hard to track the success of this initiative. "Within the limitation of HIPAA laws or other laws, we're not required to report," Adams said. "But we're going to try to be as transparent as possible."
Lieberman said forcing potentially hundreds of mentally ill patients into hospitals and outpatient programs without a firm plan in place threatens the system as a whole.
