Renamed the Rhapsody Theater, the roughly 200-seat theater now is owned by the physician Ricardo Rosenkranz, a Northwestern faculty member who is also a well-respected magician with several stage productions under his belt.
Mayne Stage, the historic East Rogers Park entertainment venue located at 1328 W. Morse Ave. and known originally as The Morse Theater, has a new owner, a new name and a new programming philosophy with magic at its core.
Renamed the Rhapsody Theater, the roughly 200-seat theater now is owned by the physician Ricardo Rosenkranz, a Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine faculty member who is also a well-respected magicianRosenkranz, who will serve as producer and artistic director, said that he plans to open his new theater in June with performances by the magician Carisa Hendrix and also by the Chicago-based psychic entertainer Ross Johnson. Tickets are to go on sale May 1.
Rosenkranz also said he hopes to showcase chamber music, as well as world music, cabaret and dance performances. The Morse Theater, which once seated 600 and served as a cultural anchor for its neighborhood, was originally a neighborhood nickelodeon and vaudeville house. Following an extensive, historically and acoustically sensitive renovation by Jennifer Pritzker in 2010 and a name change to the Mayne Stage, it became mostly a music venue, specializing in jazz.
Further plans for the Rhapsody, which has hired Mark Kozy as general manager, calls for a new tenant in the currently vacant restaurant space and an upstairs lounge suitable for close-up magic.
