Thousands of Malaysians and Singaporeans alike are making their way to Johor. The stress on its infrastructure is starting to tell. The construction site of Johor Bahru's Rapid Transit System Link near JB Sentral KTM railway station , in Johor Bahru City Center, on Nov 28, 2023.

It is not just Singaporeans who are thronging Johor, but other international visitors and Malaysians as well. It is, after all, a gateway for Malaysians who want to work in Singapore but live in Malaysia. All this leads to the critical question: Can Johor, and its infrastructure, cope with this human crush?

But Johorean commuters to Singapore have noted the increase in people from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor who now join the more than 300,000 people crossing the border daily for work.Johor is the only state in Malaysia that did not have a net increase in interstate migration in 2022. This could probably be because Johoreans preferred to find work in Singapore than in other parts of Malaysia.

Of residents, the Malaysian Department of Statistics reported that Johor enjoyed a 1.8 per cent population growth between 2022 and 2023, with 4.1 million local and foreign long-term residents in the state. Johor is already known to have large communities of people from Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak. The most important question at hand is whether the state is ready to deal with the increased population in terms of infrastructure, space, accommodation and environmental impacts.

The broadening of interest to the Iskandar Puteri area may alleviate some of this congestion as people consider moving to and living around the Second Link bridge to Singapore. JB is already seen to be more expensive than other parts of Peninsular Malaysia, with a cost of living equivalent to that of Kuala Lumpur.

This industry requires a lot of water and energy for equipment-cooling and to ensure servers work round the clock. There are also plans to improve water piping. The recently launched Johor Green Deal provides a road map that includes sustainability requirements for all new developments in the state.
