Rutgers CB Max Melton has an opportunity to raise his draft stock in 2023 and solidify his name amongst the top CBs in the 2024 class 👀
Melton, the brother of Packers wide receiver Bo, has largely flown under the radar so far as a member of the lackluster Scarlet Knights roster. Don’t be fooled by the decal on the helmet. Melton is one of the most intriguing cornerback prospects in this 2024 class and one to keep an eye on as we head into the 2023 college football season.
On tape, it’s immediately clear that Rutgers trusts Melton more than any of its other secondary defenders. The New Jersey native is an outside cornerback for the Scarlet Knights, but he’ll occasionally slide down into the slot if it means covering opponents’ leading receiver. And when Melton follows those lead receivers, good things happen.
One of the biggest things that stood out about Melton’s tape was his great ability to play press-man coverage. Directly off of the snap, he’s proficient at jamming opposing receivers at the line of scrimmage with good pop in his hands that redirects receivers and keeps him at a leverage advantage. As Melton continues to drop and mirror receivers, he consistently shows off fluid hips and good speed to keep up with even the best of what the Big Ten has to offer further downfield.
Once the ball is in the air, Melton has the great ball skills necessary to go up and make a play, whether that means knocking the ball away as a pass break-up or hauling it in for an interception. Over his last two seasons, Melton has recorded 14 passes defensed and five interceptions, including a pick-six against Temple in Rutgers’ 2021 season opener.
