Love Island star Maura Higgins has revealed she had "very dark thoughts" after finding overnight fame on the reality TV show. The Longford star became an instant hit with viewers when she appeared as a bombshell on the show in 2019.

It was going from one thing to the next. I had a breakdown. I had dark thoughts. Very dark thoughts and it got to a stage where I don’t even think I told my mum.
“It was pretty dark. I didn’t want to be here anymore. I thought that was going to be the best thing. I felt like there was so much expected of me. People say moving house is stressful. Moving house is very stressful. Moving country while being thrown into the public eye is terrifying.” “I think my first interview I was really drunk. I remember the brief said dress how you would on a first date and I rocked up in a tracksuit and trainers and I was steaming. Absolutely steaming. I did not care.”
“But also, I think if I dig deep, I don’t think I have ever forgiven my dad for not being there for me when my best friend passed away and he wasn’t there for me. He just did things that… yeah,” to which the host replied: “not what a father should do,” which she agreed with. “When the breakup happened, my mum was trying to keep a roof over four kids and herself. We were all in school. It was very, very hard. I remember seeing my mum struggle a lot.”
