We visit Dutch Delta Integrale specialist Maturo Competition Cars to meet the Stradale, its 400bhp, carbon-bodied rally car for the road -
Delta HF Integrale? When Group B was scrapped in 1986, the Delta was rapidly developed for the new Group A regulations and hit the ground with all four wheels spinning. It went on to win an incredible six WRC manufacturers’ titles on the bounce, from ’87 to ’92, earning itself icon status. It was also feted as an exceptional road car back in the day, becoming a poster car for many enthusiasts., some Group A rally cars, some tidy road cars.
The knowledge that allows Maturo to offer a reliable and durable 400bhp Integrale has been hard-won and has resulted in that vast inventory of re-engineered, more durable components. ‘The works rally cars won all the time but they started every rally with a new car,’ says Frank. ‘And even then they had to change many parts at every service. That’s not a business model that will work today.’‘The Lancia Martini team, they didn’t care about durability, they had a huge budget,’ says Marco.
The fundamental problem with the Integrale is its lack of body rigidity, says Marco. Its origins are in the original Delta, a modest family car that came out in 1979. ‘The shell of the Integrale road cars just didn’t keep up with the increases in power, grip and braking. The shells crack, they rust… jack one wheel up and you can’t open the doors. On top of that they have cooling issues, the timing belt breaks and then your engine is gone… That’s why the reputation of the car is pretty bad.
Other work included in the basic package includes a rebuilt gearbox with upgraded bearings, seals and an uprated clutch, while the chassis gets new springs, dampers and bushes, a rebuilt steering rack, new brakes, rebuilt differentials, an upgraded viscous coupling and refurbished prop and driveshafts. ‘This basic package is €59,500,’ says Marco. ‘We take out all the reliability issues. It’s a trouble-free car. We give a one-year warranty just like the factory did.
