The newest Barbie is part of the brand's Fashionista line, which offers more than 175 inclusive dolls that represent a range of skin tones, body types and abilities.

Mattel bosses said they worked closely with the National Down Syndrome Society to manufacture the doll and ensure accurate representation.

US toymaker Mattel has launched a new Barbie Doll with Down syndrome in an effort to make its range more inclusive. Picture: Mattel. Guided by the NDSS, the doll has a shorter frame and longer torso as well as a rounder face, smaller ears, almond-shaped eyes and a flat nasal bridge to reflect the characteristics of women with Down syndrome.

The pendant's three arrows, or chevron's, is a symbol that unites the Down syndrome community, representing “the lucky few” who have someone with the condition in their life.
