The Matildas' hopes of advancing to the knockout stage of the FIFA Women's World Cup have been dealt a major blow. 9News

Australia dominated much of the first half, with skipper Steph Catley going close early on, before van Egmond struck in injury time to give the home side a deserved lead. But the Matildas were stunned with virtually the final kick before the half-time whistle when a deflected ball into the box was finished off by Uchenna Kanu.

Nigeria came into the match with its trump card, Barcelona star Asisat Oshoala starting on the bench due to an injury, and having taken the lead, coach Randy Waldrum pulled the trigger. The result puts Nigeria equal top of the group with Canada, while the Matildas are in third and will likely need to beat Canada, the world No.7, to advance to the round of 16.Australia was left to lament some wastefulness in front of goal, having had an incredible 28 shots on goal, but just eight on target, while six of Nigeria's 11 shots hit the target.

Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson echoed Catley's statement, saying he was happy with the performance but not the result."I think there's part of this performance that I think is very good," he told Optus Sport."A couple of mistakes cost us we had enough opportunity to save and score more, but we scored two goals."
