Sepatutnya isu matrikulasi mati dengan keputusan Kabinet pada 24 April lalu.
Ketika isu kuota 90% untuk kemasukan pelajar Bumiputera ke matrikulasi menjadi isu sensasi bulan lalu, Kementerian Pendidikan membawa isu itu ke kabinet untuk dibuat keputusan.
Di dalam hujahnya, Maszlee berkata keputusan mengekalkan kuota “selaras dengan visi asal program matrikulasi” iaitu mengalakkan pelajar Bumiputera melanjutkan pelajaran dalam bidang sains. Sepatutnya isu matrikulasi itu mati dengan keputusan Kabinet pada 24 April lalu. Kerana ia keputusan Kabinet, ini bermakna DAP juga bersetuju dengan keputusan tersebut.
Kenyataan Dr Mahathir kemudiannya disusuli kenyataan Tun Daim Zainuddin yang jauh lebih pedas 6 hari kemudian. Beliau berkata program matrikulasi sudah tidak relevan kerana tujuan asal bagi mengimbangi agihan kaum di universiti sudah ditangani. Beliau melahirkan kebimbangan pembangkang akan mengambil kesempatan ke atas isu ini sekiranya matrikulasi dibatalkan.
Sekiranya perkara itu perlu diubah, Maszlee berkata Malaysia baru juga perlu memastikan peluang pekerjaan kepada Bumiputera tidak dinafikan. Beliau memberikan contoh pasaran kerja mendiskriminasi mereka yang tidak tahu berbahasa Mandarin dan juga kerana memakai tudung.
