The latest annual report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 343 motor vehicle collision fatalities in Massachusetts in 2020, up from 336 in 2019. Massachusetts maintained the country's lowest rate of fatalities.
More people died on Massachusetts roadways in 2020 than in 2019 despite decreased motor vehicle travel in the first year of the pandemic, but the Bay State maintained the country's lowest rate of fatalities based on miles driven amid a"national crisis," according to newly published federal data., the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Wednesday that there were 343 motor vehicle collision fatalities in Massachusetts in 2020, up from 336 in 2019.
The NHTSA estimated the number of roadway fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled rose in Massachusetts from 0.52 in 2019 to 0.63 in 2020.Nationally, traffic fatalities increased from 36,355 in 2019 to 38,824 in 2020 — a jump of about 6.8 percent — while vehicle miles traveled dropped nearly 11 percent.
"The rising fatalities on our roadways are a national crisis; we cannot and must not accept these deaths as inevitable," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said alongside release of the data.
Although the Bay State boasted the lowest rate of fatalities per motor vehicle miles traveled in 2020, Massachusetts has long been home to a dismally low seatbelt-use rate.the state's seatbelt use rate dropped 4 percentage points to about 77 percent during the pandemic, a level well below the national rate of nearly 91 percent.
