The federal government has been called on to urgently ban popular social media TikTok after the FBI admitted the Chinese-owned app is able to collect user data, device software information and drive propaganda.

FBI Director Christopher Wray on Wednesday said the popular app, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, posed a national security concern.

Shadow minister for home affairs Karen Andrews told Sky News Australia that the news was “very concerning” and called for TikTok to be stripped from all government devices. Ms Andrews said TikTok posed a"huge threat" and there should consequently be a wider consideration of its availability in the country.
