Masjid Al-Mursyid in Perlis is a pioneer for a waqf solar project through a collaboration with MAIPs and Bank Rakyat. This initiative started last September and has successfully raised funds to install solar panels at the mosque. The project aims to reduce electricity bills and utilize the savings for mosque development activities.

Masjid Al-Mursyid in Guring, Pauh, Arau, Perlis , has become a pioneer for a waqf solar project through a synergy between the Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council of Perlis (MAIPs) and Bank Rakyat . This initiative began last September and notably, the mosque management successfully raised RM30,000 to realize this endeavor. Through its implementation, Bank Rakyat also contributed RM62,000, while MAIPs channeled RM20,000 for the development of this solar project valued at RM110,000.

Recently, the Crown Prince of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, as the President of MAIPs, graciously inaugurated the waqf solar project. His Royal Highness also witnessed the symbolic handover of the project's contribution by a Member of the Bank Rakyat Board of Directors, Prof. Dr. Raduwan Idar, to the Chief Executive Officer of MAIPs, Mohd. Nazim Mohd. Noor.Syed Abu Bakar Syed Kamal Bharin Jamalullail, Chairman of the Masjid Al-Mursyid Committee, said the idea of using solar power originated because they frequently faced a high monthly electricity bill burden. Previously, the average electricity bill was around RM4,500 per month, but it could reach up to RM7,000 during Ramadan. “However, after the installation of these 72 solar panels, we can save up to 60 percent, and the electricity bill has dropped to RM2,500 per month,” he said.In addition, Syed Abu Bakar explained that the excess savings can be utilized for various activities to enhance the mosque. The waqf solar program model is implemented through collections from mosque congregation members, along with contributions from the public. “The waqf solar project collection started last September and was also promoted online to facilitate the flow of information,” he said. Syed Abu Bakar added that Masjid Al-Mursyid has also become a model for the implementation of the Mosque Transformation Program to Green Places of Worship in collaboration with the expertise of the Energy Management Centre and Sustainable Campus, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Unimap). Currently, Masjid Al-Mursyid is striving to achieve recognition as a green place of worship through the Low Carbon City Challenge 2030 organized by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC). “This initiative also involves students from the Faculty of Engineering and Electrical Technology (FKTE) Unimap from the Electric System Maintenance Technology program. The students play a role in planned activities, including converting lights to LED types, installing smart wifi switches, water-efficient ablution faucets, 3R recycling stations, installing rainwater harvesting tanks, and a smart electrical energy monitoring system,” he said. Syed Abu Bakar further emphasized that the mosque has also become a pioneer for waqf solar projects in the country. Despite being located on the outskirts of the city, he said that the mosque with a capacity of 800 worshippers has undergone many drastic changes. Meanwhile, a member of the congregation, Mohseen Mahmud, 71, welcomed this initiative because it cultivates the practice of frugality. He said that the approach taken by the mosque management gives a breath of fresh air in line with the current times. “May this waqf solar project be emulated by other mosques in their mission to save electricity bills every month,” he said. In this waqf solar program at Masjid Al-Mursyid, the solar panels are supplied and installed by Gading Kencana Sdn. Bhd., one of the bumiputera companies specializing in the renewable energy industry
