HOUSTON, Texas — Mary Lou Retton, who rose to fame in 1984 when she became the first U.S. woman to win Olympics gold in the individual gymnastics all-around event, is “fighting for her life” in a hospital with a rare form of pneumonia.that her mother has been in the intensive care unit of a hospital for more than a week.
“My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life,” Kelly writes. “She is not able to breathe on her own. She’s been in the ICU for over a week now.” Retton, 55, was only 16 years old when she became an icon during the Olympics, winning five medals overall, two bronze, two silver and a gold.
