Simu Liu elaborated on his criticism of MoonKnight's Mandarin language scene, saying key decision-makers in the process should have caught the error. '...The sound that came out of that man’s mouth did not resemble Mandarin in any way, shape or form.”
Simu Liu, star of Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, elaborates on his criticism of the Mandarin language scenes in Moon Knight. Released earlier this year on Disney+, Moon Knight stars Oscar Isaac as Steven Grant, a mild-mannered museum gift shop employee who comes to realize that he actually possesses the powers of Khonshu, the ancient Egyptian god of the moon.
While Moon Knight has proven itself a highlight of the MCU Disney+ shows, it hasn't been entirely free from criticism. After Moon Knight episode 2,"Summon the Suit," Liu took to Twitter to criticize villain Arthur Harrow's attempt to speak Mandarin. Although Harrow is supposedly fluent in the language, Liu made clear that Hawke's Mandarin needed some work, writing"Harrow needs to fire his Mandarin teacher.
“I think there’s maybe a misconception that Marvel is this kind of monolithic, all-powerful single organism with infinite resources. I think that it’s easy to allocate the blame to Marvel as a whole. If you really break it down, there was a translator that probably shouldn’t have been a translator. There were probably a couple of people in the decision-making process that should have raised a flag that didn’t. I have full appreciation for the fact that Mandarin is not an easy language.
Although Liu remains critical of the Mandarin in Moon Knight, his comment does at least shed some light on the Marvel filmmaking process and attempts to explain what could have gone wrong. Blaming Marvel as a whole for the blunder may not be the correct move, according to Liu, because the poor Mandarin language use in Moon Knight likely comes down to a select few individuals not having the right knowledge of the language or the willingness to intervene.
While it remains to be seen what the future holds for Moon Knight and whether it will get a season 2, the creators of the show are now aware of Liu's criticism and will likely attempt to avoid any linguistic blunders should it return. Marvel is evidently a large operation with considerable resources, but Liu's comments show that each production is autonomous to a certain extent, and sometimes mistakes are able to slip through the cracks.
