San Diego’s first Marriott AC hotel, known for its European styling and appeal to millennial travelers, has opened in the Gaslamp Quarter, six years after it wasThe timing of the 147-room hotel’s opening is good, given the continued uptick in demand for leisure travel, but the timing of the project’s start of construction in 2019 was not so opportune. Less than a year after work began, the pandemic arrived, delaying the opening by at least a year, said the developer, the Briad Group.
The company became better acquainted with the AC brand on a trip to Spain, where the concept originated with Spanish hotelier Antonio Catalan, whose original properties in Spain, Portugal and Italy were re-branded as AC Hotels by Marriott. AC Hotels currently has 175 hotels in more than 25 countries and territories. The Gaslamp Quarter hotel is the second AC property developed by Briad.
The San Diego hotel’s daily morning buffet is very much drawn from Europe, featuring croissants imported from France and a spread of meats, cheeses, yogurts, and seasonal fruits. In the evening, in the hotel bar area, tapas are served with hand-crafted cocktails. There is no parking within the hotel property but the company has an agreement in place to provide valet parking.
