The Deputy Prime Minister has opened up about an eye-opening experience he arranged for himself while a member of Labor's shadow cabinet in 2018.

Off the coast of Western Australia in 2018, the then-Shadow Defence Minister arranged for himself to go beneath the surface with some of Australia’s most courageous sailors on the Collins Class vessel HMAS Rankin to discover, as the minister puts it, “why submarines are so important”.“It was a unique experience. I had 24 hours on the submarine so I got to see, if you like, the full daily cycle of life,” Mr Marles told Sunday Agenda.

“It had something like the dimensions of being on an aeroplane – not quite the same, you don’t have the field of view. There was that sense of rubbing up against things as you move down a corridor. Everything was tight. On a Collins Class submarine, submarines are under water for weeks; when Australia gets its nuclear sub deployment, that will stretch to months.

“We will get the first Australian-flagged sub in the early 2030s but well prior to that, really from now, you’ll have Australians working on nuclear submarines - both the Virginia Class submarines in America and the Astute class in Britain,” he said. “Look I have . I have a high regard for Paul Keating and I’ve been keen to keep him abreast of the government's thinking,” Mr Marles said.

“We will release this in April - it will be released imminently. It’s an incredibly important piece of work because what it seeks to do is really restate Australia’s strategic posture for the first time in 35 years.”
