and suggested that he would be willing to allow train operators to find a short term solution with the unions on the issue of staffing and driver shortages.

The issue stems from operators’ overreliance on “rest day working agreements”, where drivers can volunteer to work on weekends, particularly on Sundays, in return for being paid overtime. Speaking after the meeting, Mr Harper said relying on drivers having to come to work on their day off was “not a long-term solution”.
