San Marcos police chief disagrees with ‘politics’ of marijuana decriminalization

Eighty-two percent of San Marcos voters approved Proposition A, unofficially titled the “reeferendum,” in November 2022. The law decriminalized possession of up to 4 ounces of marijuana in the city, and is expected to save taxpayers as much as $13 million in prosecution and court fees each year.

“They would probably agree with what I’ll call the bones of the ordinance; they would not agree with the process in which it was adopted,” he said. The ballot measure began as a groundswell movement in January 2022 led by local advocacy group Mano Amiga and statewide voter engagement nonprofit Ground Game Texas. The two groups set up petition drives to get marijuana decriminalization on the November ballot, and eventually acquired more than 10,000 signatures to present to city council.

On election day last November, a total of 15,808 voters approved Proposition A, while 3,502 voted against it. The ordinance went into effect immediately.
