Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling discuss working with Mattel, the movie's meta-commentary and humor, and how their understanding of Barbie has changed:
Barbie follows the titular character on a journey of self-discovery. After being the perfect doll in the perfect utopia of Barbie Land, Barbie experiences a crisis. In the aftermath, she questions the world she lives in and her very existence, which leads to her being ejected from Barbie Land into the real world. This leads Barbie and Ken on an adventure in the real world, where they learn truths about themselves and how the world sees them.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling spoke with Screen Rant about Barbie. Robbie explained how her understanding of Barbie changed after working with Gerwig on this movie and shared her thoughts on their collaboration with Mattel. Gosling discussed the joy of joining Robbie and Gerwig, revealing that Robbie gave him a themed gift every day.
Ryan Gosling: Yeah, I think it's funny the way the movie starts. She's a monolith from 2001, and she has been this cultural monolith for as long as I've been around. So, I think this was an opportunity for a lot of people to sort of go and pay your respects to the Queen. [Chuckles] She's like a magical creature in that way, and I think only she could deliver this kind of Barbie movie — and the movie that Barbie deserves, honestly. Because Barbie is so many different things. She's got a million different jobs, and she's meant a lot of things to different people; it's good, and it's bad, and it's this and that. You need someone like Greta who can actually capture all that and entertain you at the same time.
Margot Robbie: I told Ryan if he did the job, I'd give him a present every day. And then he did, so I was like, "Well, I gotta get a lot of presents."
