WASHINGTON, D.C.— As President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. sought to redefine the Philippines and United States relationship amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, US President Joe Biden said that his country maintains its "ironclad" commitment to the Philippines' defense and security efforts.
Marcos and Biden met at the White House on Monday afternoon, May 1 . It was the first visit of a Philippine president to the White House in many years. "And so it is only natural that — for the Philippines to look to its sole treaty partner in the world, to strengthen and to redefine the relationship that we have and the roles that we play in the face of these tensions that we see now around the South China Sea and the Asia-Pacific and Indo-Pacific region," Marcos said in his opening statement.
