Was this the best Elite Eight we've ever witnessed? The last Elite Eight with the madness to match or outshine this year's came in 2005. Here's what Steve Wieberg wrote for USA TODAY on that weekend: The mayhem of 2019's regional finals began with Texas Tech's upset of No. 1 seed Gonzaga in Saturday's 75-69 thriller. The Red Raiders reached their first Final Four in program history by stifling the nation's best offense just enough to earn their ticket to Minneapolis.
The last Elite Eight game of the weekend looked like it was also heading to overtime with Duke freshman R.J. Barrett at the line with two free-throw attempts with six seconds left. But Barrett missed the first attempt and unintentionally made the second, setting up a game-winning inbouonds play that saw Spartans star Cassius Winston evade Duke defenders as time expired. MSU's 68-67 win was fueled by Kenny Goins' 3-pointer with 39 seconds left.
