The Grand Imam condemned Senator Robin Padilla's same-sex marriage bill saying it is 'immoral.'
Alim Abdulmajeed Djamla, the Grand Imam, said that the senator’s Senate Bill No. 449 “is tantamount to disbelief , which is outside the creed of Islam.”
“I regret to inform all Muslims in general and the Muslims in the Philippines that I and those who follow me have withdrawn our support for Senator Robin Padilla and strongly condemn his sponsorship of Same-Sex Marriage Bill No. Civil Union Acts in the Senate,” Djamla said in a statement. “This is based on the doctrine that same-sex marriage is considered immoral by all religions and is forbidden under Islamic law,” the statement read further.
Under existing laws, same-sex couples are not entitled to marry like straight couples do, with the Family Code defining marriage as “a special contract of permanent union between a man and a woman entered into in accordance with law for the establishment of conjugal and family life.” According to Padilla in a statement on Sunday , his bill is open for discussion and everyone will be given the chance to air their grievances during hearings.
