Australia v India at stumps: Cameron Green’s first Test hundred was one to remember, while Usman Khawaja crafted the longest innings ever by an Australian in India
Just occasionally, the first Test century by a young player carries the momentous sense of a long career to come.
Coming out to bat with the game in the balance late on day one, Green had pushed the score along admirably to take pressure off Khawaja. On day two, as the sun beat down on India’s fielders, Green forged a century with all the assurance of a player with supreme gifts and burgeoning knowledge about how to use them.In the final session, Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy had the time of their lives in a rollicking stand worth 70, including 15 off Mohammed Shami’s sole over with the third new ball.
It was fitting, in a way, that Khawaja and Green would combine for such a big stand; their 208-run partnership the highest in Tests between Australia and India since Ajinka Rahane and Virat Kohli put on 262 at the MCG in 2014.Some of the most affecting scenes of the second season of the Amazon documentary about the Australian team feature Green and Khawaja talking about. Otherwise, though, the pair resumed batting as though virtually no time had passed since the final over on the first night. They were watchful in the early overs, while India’s captain Rohit Sharma sought to impose some pressure while keeping the runs down.Green raised his 50 in the opening over, then scored mainly through singles and twos before unleashing a flurry of drives when Umesh Yadav pitched full in search of some swing.
