Beck has to offer the party faithful hope — something she won\u0027t be able to do unless divisions cool now and interest in the NDP heats up.

That heat is now on new leader Carla Beck — the Saskatchewan NDP’s first woman leader and fourth leader in past 13 years. In its first 80 years of existence, the provincial NDP only had five leaders — all of whom became premier.

There are individual Saskatchewan Party MLAs who got more votes in their ridings in the past few provincial elections. In her speech prior to Sunday’s voting and tabulation, Beck hit hard on the need for party unity, blending it with the need for pragmatism. It was a position that drew applause from activists like environmentalist and University of Regina prof Emily Eaton, who — despite saying she has NDP membership or party affiliation — tweeted on the weekend that six MLAs including Beck attempted to oust Meili.

Harvey didn’t turn down the heat much on Sunday. She did express her admiration for Beck, who was first elected in 2016, but maintained the party’s focus must be also exclusively on a burning planet. The focus should be less on bringing people back to the party but giving people reason to support them, Harvey said Sunday, further announcing she was publicly supporting Saskatchewan Liberal leader Jeff Walters’ petition to force a public inquiry into the Sask. Party government’s handling of COVID-19. She urged New Democrats to join her in signing this petition and another petition she is starting over government forestry policies.
