The area can be dangerous because of the strong currents, said a local business owner. There have been many drownings over the years, she said.

George D. Vitetta, 65, of Rotterdam, pushed his wife and two grandchildren to safety before he went under the water Lake Ontario Bay on Friday, July, 22, 2022. Sandy Creek, N.Y. — With waves just up to their knees, George D. Vitetta and his wife, Kathy, watched as their grandchildren played in the water on a sand bar in a Lake Ontario bay.

This is the story of what happened that Friday morning, July 22, when a family went out to enjoy the beautiful waters of Lake Ontario only to have the outing suddenly turn tragic. This report is based on interviews with the family and local authorities. They docked the boat near North Sandy Pond to spend some time on the beach and let the kids play in the water, Gabriel said.

“I don’t know how to describe it,” she said. “It’s like somebody’s pulling you out but no one’s there. There’s a massive current.”Gabriel said the family wasn’t that far out but they believed “Thank God she saw them and she reacted or we probably would have lost them all,” Gabriel said. “The lady said, ‘the current is so bad through there sometimes. I do not know how any of them survived.’”
