A 48-year-old man is jailed for the 'chilling' and 'horrifying' rape at knifepoint of his neighbour 31 years ago as she begged him not to harm her toddler daughter.
A man who broke into his neighbour's Perth home and subjected her to a "horrific", "chilling" and "humiliating" sexual assault 31 years ago has been sentenced to more than four years behind bars. The victim's toddler daughter was asleep nearby at the timeNow aged 48, the man cannot be identified because at the time of his offences, on Good Friday in 1992, he had just turned 17. Because of that, his case was dealt with by the Perth Children's Court today.
After the attack, the offender rummaged through the woman's handbag before fleeing the scene after she told him her purse was in the kitchen."It was pre-meditated and planned," he said in a submission.Mr Hollingsworth read the woman's victim impact statement to the court, as she listened to proceedings from a remote room.
His lawyer, Neville Barber, said nothing he could say on behalf on his client could take away the lifelong impact on the victim of "these awful crimes".Dr Barber said reports showed the offender was "a very troubled young man in the 90s" because of long standing psychological and developmental issues for which he was not treated.
However, she said she had to take into account his psychological and developmental issues, his pleas of guilty and the fact he had not committed a crime in the last 15 years and was considered a low risk of reoffending.
