Liam Whelan attacked a cardiologist in the victim's Dublin home after meeting him at a pub. The victim suffered serious injuries, including a brain bleed, skull fracture, and permanent hearing loss.

Victim required surgery remove blood clot putting pressure on brain and suffered permanent hearing loss in one ear

The court heard the victim later required surgery to remove a large blood clot that was putting pressure on his brain and to reconstruct his skull due to a fracture. He has suffered permanent hearing loss in one ear and was unable to work for six months due to a risk of epilepsy and seizures. The victim met Whelan while he was outside in the smoking area and they decided to go back to the victim’s home.

The victim got out of the house and bought some paracetamol before he returned home to sleep. It had been his intention to seek help in St James’s Hospital but when he arrived there, he discovered there were 11 ambulances lined up, so he decided to drive to his home in the south of the country. Gda Delaney said Whelan had 63 previous convictions including for breaching a barring order, road traffic offences, possession of drugs for sale or supply and possession of knives.
