A 33-year-old man in Singapore was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail for assaulting his 84-year-old grandmother. Jeremy Su Zhiwei pleaded guilty to charges of voluntarily causing hurt and contravening a personal protection order (PPO). The PPO was put in place in 2022 after Su had numerous physical altercations with his grandmother. These incidents required police and social service intervention.
Between 2021 and 2023, Su was admitted to the Institute of Mental Health multiple times for aggressive behavior towards his grandmother, including acts of pinching and choking. On November 22, 2024, Su went to his grandmother's house demanding money. When she refused, citing his lack of transparency about his needs, Su became enraged. He started kicking her bed frame vigorously and pulled her hair when she pleaded with him to stop. The assault caused pain and bruising to his grandmother's neck, as well as redness on her scalp. Following the incident, the grandmother contacted her son, Su's uncle, to inform him of the assault.Deputy Public Prosecutor Cheah Wenjie sought a 12 to 14-week jail term, emphasizing the appalling nature of Su's actions. She stated that Su's repeated abuse towards his elderly grandmother, culminating in strangulation and hair pulling, demonstrated a blatant disregard for the PPO meant to protect her. Before receiving his sentence, Su told District Judge Eugene Teo that he planned to continue his studies and get a job upon release. Judge Teo encouraged Su to follow through with his plans and warned him against reoffending
