A California man who attempted to rape a sleeping co-worker at Yosemite National Park has been sentenced to over 12 years in prison.
has been sentenced to over 12 years in prison, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced Friday.
According to prosecutors, Charles Porter, 32, was working for Aramark, a third-party hospitality company contracted by Yosemite to run the park's food, lodging, transportation and more. On April 14, 2020, he snuck into a co-worker's cabin in the park's employee housing. The victim was asleep until Porter"began to sexually assault the victim, biting and punching him during the attack," the Department of Justice. As Porter attempted to rape him, the victim managed to fight free and run to the door to yell for help. Neighbors heard him and rushed to the scene, physically restraining Porter to stop the assault.
Charles Porter, 32, formerly of Southern California, was found guilty of attempting to sexually assault a co-worker at Yosemite National Park in 2020.In 2021, National Park investigators said it was possible Porter had assaulted more victims."Based upon new information obtained in the course of this case, investigators believe there may be more victims of assaults or sexual assaults by the defendant,"in March 2021.
Because Yosemite National Park is federal, not a state, land, Porter was tried by a federal jury earlier this year. He was found guilty of attempted aggravated sexual abuse, abusive sexual contact, assault with intent to commit aggravated sexual abuse, assault with intent to commit abusive sexual contact and assault by striking or wounding.
